Under state law, districts can replace up to five traditional snow days, or an equivalent number of instructional hours with remote learning. When remote days run out, districts often use banked instructional hours including converting teacher workdays into instructional days before adding new school days.

The letter requests legislative action to expand remote learning day allocations for districts facing prolonged weather emergencies, as well as emergency funding for critical materials like road salt and ice melt.

Whether schools are closed or go virtual does have an impact on whether those days have to be made up. A 2022 North Carolina law allows each public school to receive five remote instruction days. These are days that will not have to be made up. Schools, however, can also apply for a Good Cause Waiver for up to 15 remote learning days.
